Stop Climate Chaos coalition members Sustrans, and their ambitious Connect2 scheme, are one of four major projects competing for £50 million of funding in the Big Lottery Fund’s ‘The People’s £50 Million Lottery Giveaway’.
And the winner will be chosen by the Great British public through an internet and phone vote in early December.
Connect2 is a UK-wide project that aims to transform local travel in 79 cities, towns and villages. Through literally building bridges and crossings over main roads, rivers and railways, the scheme will greatly improve mobility for both pedestrians and cyclists. The new crossings will also link into networks of paths, that will enable direct and continuous access to local schools, shops, workplaces and green spaces.
Sustrans have calculated that, when complete, Connect2 schemes will carry over 60 million journeys a year with a potential carbon saving of 79,000 tonnes.
Online voting begins at the People's £50 Million website on Monday 26th November. ITV1 will then air TV programmes about each of the four projects over four days from Monday 3rd December, with Connect2 being covered on Tuesday 4th December. The phone lines will open for voting on Friday 7th December and will close on Monday 10th December.
Register on Sustran's Connect2 website now or text 'Connect2' to 80010 to receive information on how and when to vote.
